Outbreak of “Mysterious Disease” Newspapers report the A strange disease has ravaged a small community in western Nigeria. A “mysterious” disease that kills patients within 24 hours has claimed at least 18 lives in a southeastern Nigerian town, the government said. Residents of the Ikale community in Ondo state have described the mysterious epidemic as more deadly than Ebola and many are afraid to touch the dead, the Daily Post in Nigeria reported. According to Adeyanju, the findings from post-mortems carried out on the victims and other laboratory tests revealed that the disease was neither epidemic nor contagious. The disease, whose symptoms include headache, weight loss, blurred vision and loss of consciousness, killed the victims within a day of falling ill, he said. Laboratory tests have so far ruled out Ebola or any other virus or bacterial infection, The WHO declared Nigeria Ebola-free in October last year, after the deadly virus claimed seven lives out of the total 19 cases reported in the West African country. Government officials have confirmed the health teams had been deployed to take samples of blood, urine and cerebrospinal fluid from the victims. These samples have been sending to a laboratory in Lagos for analysis and identification.
