SHELX is simply a widely used set of crystallographic computer programs that I have spent most of the last 45 years, in my spare time from university teaching, writing and I am by no means finished yet. There are many better programs but for reasons that I have never understood, many crystallographers like to use (and cite) SHELX. You can find more details on the SHELX homepage. I'm not really interested in being highly cited. I would much rather write computer programs!
